If uninstalling Legacy 7.0 to reinstall Legacy 6.0 please:

A.  If you you have backups of your Legacy 6.0 family files before they were opened and converted to the new Legacy 7.0 format then follow these steps:

1. Uninstall Legacy 7.0

2. With Windows Explorer or My Computer find and look in the C:\Legacy folder or whatever folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you will find several files remaining that you will need to delete. Carefully delete all of the files in the Legacy folder but DO NOT delete any of the folders like the Data folder, Picture Folder as these folders hold your data and you don't want to accidentally delete your family file, pictures, sounds or video files. All the other files should be deleted.

3. Rename the C:\Legacy\Data folder.  We don't want it deleted and renaming it to something like C:\Legacy\zzzV7Data will allow you to keep those family files around for a backup until you know for sure you have everything working again in Legacy 6.0.

4. Use one of the above links to download and install the final build of Legacy 6.0. (Install from the Web is the fastest, but if it does not work for you then please download and run the FULL SETUP.)

5. Start Legacy 6.0 and click on Help > Unlock Deluxe Edition and enter your version 6.0 Deluxe Edition Customer Number.

6. Restore your Legacy 6.0 family files to the C:\Legacy\Data folder.

1. Using Legacy 7.0, Export each family file to a Legacy Gedcom file.  Make sure you review the options very carefully.   You will want to make sure you include all private and living data.   Also, remember the name of these Gedcom files and where you are saving them to as you will be re-importing these after you get Legacy 6.0 re-installed.

2. Uninstall Legacy 7.0.

3. With Windows Explorer or My Computer find and look in the C:\Legacy folder or whatever folder you had Legacy installed in. Within this folder you will find several files remaining that you will need to delete. PLEASE READ: Windows Vista and Legacy Family Tree 6.0 and Earlier

If you are installing Legacy Family Tree 7.0 or earlier on a computer with Windows Vista, you need to be aware of the follow issues:

Installing Legacy

For Legacy Family Tree to run properly under Windows Vista, only install the Legacy program to the default C:\Legacy folder, rather than changing it to "C:\Program Files\Legacy".  If you install Legacy to the Program Files directory, you will discover that Vista does not allow users to write files to that location.  Instead, Vista redirects any changes to Legacy files to a Virtual Store folder, a location in the user’s profile.  This creates serious problems, for example, if more than one user (people with different user accounts) attempt to work in the same family file.

Make sure the User Account Control (UAC) feature is enabled in Windows Vista. If this feature has been disabled, you need to re-enable it, otherwise you will get run-time error 339.

1. Open up Control Panel, and type in 'user account' into the search box.

2. Click on the link for Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off.

Check the box, then click OK, and reboot your computer. Legacy should run properly now.

Help File:  The Help files are not being updated in Legacy 5.0 or earlier.  If you are using version 5.0 or earlier in Vista, you must download the WinHlp32.exe patch from Microsoft in order to access Help.  Without this patch you will get an error message that says "Help file format not supported by Vista."  Once the WinHlp32.exe patch is downloaded/installed you will able to open the Help files in Legacy, as well as other programs that are not yet updated, or that are not going to be updated.  This patch is not needed for Windows XP or earlier.

Please go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us where you'll find information about this problem and links to download the WinHlp32.exe patch.  There are two options to download:

Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu For 64-bit Vista
Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu For 32-bit Vista

Using Different User Accounts:  If people are using Legacy 6.0 or earlier in different user accounts in Vista, when you go into Legacy after switching accounts, you'll need click Options and select Customize > Locations.  Next click on the Reset button next to the "Location of temporary files" field before creating reports, or doing a Check/Repair, etc.  If you installed in Admin account and are using Legacy strictly under the user account, go there and click on the Reset button to set the path to the correct Temp folder.  This does not apply to Windows XP or earlier.
